Red Carpet- collaboration with an actress

Having met over two years ago, Marene Van Holk and I always said we'd work again together, and here is the product of what we're doing. Its a short one women play written and directed by Marene, and I'm a rather important character.... not just the background music, but her inner soul. The emotion.... the bit that is too deep even for words to be able to pronounce it.

The project is so much fun, although gruelling hard work. We basically rehearse whenever both of us are free and rather unlike other musicians, when we get going, we will end up not breaking for over four hours at a time!

The tricky thing is, how do these two art forms actually interact?! We play games with each other sometimes, literally having conversations with made up characters to see if we can sustain a few minutes of dialogue.... It's hilarious sometimes as she can take it off on tangents thinking that I said one thing, when I tried to say something else. Music can be so specific, and yet, other times, be so so free.... Open to interpretation.

In this play, red carpet, I'm meant to be this professional womens soul, her heart, the bit she's shut out long long ago. Understanding how to get inside a character means using the same words that an actor can understand.... we speak the same language really.... just a different dialect.... But fundamentally, working with an actor is just like chamber music, the entire process is so so similar.

Its really hard to describe... so just come and watch/listen/feel it with us :)
