In December 2008, I sat in a minibus with a friend of mine talking about putting on a chamber music festival, and quite simply, this is it...... The Handala Project
Let me tell you abit about the friend.... He is called Ramzi Aburedwan and he grew up in a Ramallah refugee camp. He runs a music school in the West Bank called Al Kamandjati. The minibus journey we were on was through the West Bank, quite simply put, this is a chamber music festival like no other you've ever heard of before.... and sure enough.... I'm its Artistic Director!!
In short, it's sponsored by Deutsche Bank, is planned for May 2011, will span two weeks; one week in Palestine and one in UK- playing in some of the biggest halls in the country. The music will be structured around two quartets, one a string quartet and one an arabic quartet. It will all be fully filmed, including a documentary and live music DVD release by a couple of my friends who work up at the BBC :)
